The Lightness of Her Bones Surprised Him

When the husband and wife returned from their daughter’s college graduation, they discovered two doves nesting in a corner beneath the crooked ceiling of their front porch.
The husband set down the suitcases, and as the birds fled from the house, their wings whistled across the lawn. Around the porch lay scattered a handful of twigs, stringy rootlets, and bits of twine that had fallen from the untidy nest. The husband patted his suit coat for his keys. He saw dried bird shit at his feet.
